morning. she joins us now live in walnut creek. >> reporter: neighbors told me they didn't hear what was going on but when they found out what happened, they said nothing like this happens here. >> this is a super quiet community. it's shocking. >> reporter: one suspect is dead of walnut creek's first homicide of the year and first officer involved shooting in almost five years. >> it's a little un-- un-- unnerving because you wake up and find out there's a shooting outside your house. i didn't even hear it. >> reporter: it happened at this apartment complex in creek side of near las lomas high school an area deemed safe by those who live here. >> this is a really safe neighborhood. i feel comfortable walking and my girlfriend walks the dog. and so hopefully that won't change anything now. >> reporter: police told us they get a disturbing phone call from a woman in the early- morning hours. >> we received a call via transfer from the fire department that approximately 3:15 this morning, there was

screaming in the background. officers were immediately dispatched and arrived on scene within minutes. >> reporter: the struggle started at the apartment. police say multiple officers went into the complex and were confronted by an armed man. they would not say what weapon he had. >> unfortunately, they were forced to shoot the individual and he died at the scene. >> reporter: investigators including the contra costa county crime lab scoured the scene looking for evidence. police say they are not looking for any other suspects and no officers or anyone else were hurt in the shooting. both walnut creek police and the contra costa county d.a.'s office will be taking over this investigation. and police here say they will have another update for us later this afternoon. in walnut creek, cate caugiran, cbs 5. we now know it was an 11- year-old boy from daly city that is killed in a police pursuit in pasadena on christmas day. police and fbi agents were conducting a gang sweep when they started following a car

that committed a traffic violation. the suspects took off and eventually hit a minivan carrying a family from daly city. an adult and 11-year-old were killed in the car. three others in the minivan were injured, as well. four suspects are arrested and face murder charges. the search is on for suspects in a gang-related shooting in south san jose last night short live before 9 p.m. in the area off serenade and lullaby drives. officers safe the suspect started an altercation with the victim, shot him and then took off. the victim taken to the hospital, no word yet on his condition. apparently the smell is what led to the discovery of a ghoulish plot. two people are under arrest now for what was found in the backyard of a home on warren avenue in vallejo. it was a badly decomposed body. richard romer of alameda died two years ago at the age of 56. investigators say romer's 22- year-old son joseph romer hit his father's body -- hid his father's body in a box and stashed it in a relative's

backyard in vallejo. the body was found this month. >> my sister had walked over there and got about to where the red car is and she is like, wow! i mean, she could smell it from that far off. so that's a good, you know, 40, 50 feet away that she could smell it. >> the cause of romer's death is still under investigation but he had been sick. joseph romer and his girlfriend sandy are accused of hiding the body and cashing thousands of dollars of pension checks. pg&e crews have now found the source of a gas leak in brentwood. a group of neighbors stayed awake all night though after reporting a gas smell at about 6:15 yesterday. people evacuated three houses that showed elevated gas readings on the 600 block of allbrook drive. the source of the leak remained a mystery for hours. then just after 3:00 this morning, pg&e crews finally found the source. the leak was coming from a cracked cap on the underground plastic gas main. after controlling the gas flow,

crews dug a hole to squeeze it off completely. they have since fixed the cap and repairs to the street are expected to be finished sometime during the noon hour. president obama called congressional leaders before he left hawaii searching for a way to avoid the "fiscal cliff." danielle nottingham is in washington where it appears little progress is being made. >> reporter: president obama and the senate cut short their holiday vacations to work out a last-minute deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff." they have less than five days to come to agreement before tax hikes and spending cuts kick in. senate majority leader harry reid has a plan to let tax cuts expire for households making more than $250,000 a year along with short-term spending cuts instead of the long-term cuts that would happen if there is nodule. >> the american people are waiting for the ball to drop but it's not going to be a good

drop because americans' taxes are approaching the wrong direction. >> reporter: negotiations between president obama and house republican leaders stalled last week. the house is now leaving it up to the democratic-controlled senate to solve the problem before the new year deadline. in addition to the "fiscal cliff," treasury secretary timothy geithner warned congress that the u.s. is close to hitting its debt limit of $16.4 trillion. geithner saved the government will take steps to allow more burrough after december 31. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. let's look now at the markets. stocks fell sharply by 55 and change. the drop is attributed to consumer confidence falling to the lowest level since august. the storm that moved across the country pushing northeast through new england after plowing through 30 states dumping snow, sleet and

spawning dozens of tornadoes. edward lawrence has the latest. >> reporter: the northeast is dig out from a giant storm that dumped more than a foot of snow in some places. >> it's the heaviest snow i can remember. it's shutting the machine down every time of you give it a little push. the ice just clogs it up. >> reporter: the storm started in california last weekend and crossed the country creating blizzards in the midwest and south. several people died in traffic accidents. and the roads remain dangerous for holiday travelers heading home. in arkansas, this man needed a tow after sliding into a ditch. >> going about 55 or 60 and i hit like a chunk of ice or something. >> reporter: the weather caused thousands of flight cancellations this week. and more delays are expected in the northern part of the country today. one family is trying to get to miami and keeping an eye on their flight. >> we are delayed a bit. hopefully we'll get out of here. i'm fine with an hour delay. just, you know, trying to at least make it out some point today. >> reporter: in the south,

people are still cleaning up after a series of christmas day tornadoes. the powerful winds ripped this trailer park in alabama apart. >> the home behind us was rolled off its foundations into the woods and pretty much destroyed and obliterated. >> reporter: it's believed some 40 tornadoes touched down in the south damaging more than 130 homes and businesses. edward lawrence for cbs news, new york. take a look at this video. a tornado causing havoc. this images are outside a walgreens drugstore in mobile, alabama. you can see cars sliding around lots of debris swirling about. people were scrambling to take cover. this guy in a moment -- well, as far as we know, there were no serious injuries to the people who got caught when the tornado touched down on tuesday. it was one of more than 30 that happened across the south. wild weather week. nowl.a. rescuers are trying to pull this man from a palm tree. somehow he got stuck up in the

older palm tree and as you can see firefighters are shimmying their way up the tree to get him down. only in southern california. how about that? coming up doctors describe it's a series of setbacks. the latest on the former president george h.w. bush now hospitalized in houston. >> this picture a very private lesson in privacy for the first family of facebook coming up. >> and the sunshine is making a comeback all across the bay area. mostly sunny skies blue skies as well. we were able to spot a few clouds out there over by mount diablo. the rain is coming soon. we'll tell you when after this. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

welcome back. former president george h.w. bush remains in intensive care at a hospital in texas for four days and he still has a stubborn fever. cbs reporter adriana diaz has more on the condition of the man known as bush 41. >> the honorable george herbert walker bush. >> reporter: former president george h.w. bush is alert and in guarded condition in houston at methodist hospital. >> he is conscious. he recognizes people around here. he is joking with his doctors. those are good signs. >> reporter: the 88-year-old was put on a liquid diet wednesday as his fever got worse. the president was hospitalized last month because of a lingering cough. the oldest living former u.s. president made headlines in retirement skydiving to celebrate recent birthdays. how do you feel, mr. president? >> i feel wonderful! >> reporter: several months ago he was at the white house for the unveiling of his son's official presidential portrait. >> i am honored to be hanging

near a man who gave me the greatest gift possible unconditional love that would be number 41. >> reporter: in recent years bush has developed a form of parkinson's disease that makes it difficult to walk. family spokesman says this latest illness has taken its toll. >> the president looks like he's done a few rounds with mike tyson. >> reporter: still doctors are cautiously optimistic about his treatment. even though he was on a liquid diet the elder bush was able to join his family for a christmas meal. they are hopeful he can turn things around. adriana diaz for cbs news. had the ceo of facebook is being called out about privacy concerns. his older sister says a private photo was tweeted by a woman she didn't know. turns out that woman is friends with another one of zuckerberg's sisters who was tagged in a photo. the tweet sister randi says the

problem is about human decency. probably talking to her brother. new law goes into effect january 1 making it illegal for employers to demand passwords to employees' social media accounts. governor jerry brown says the new law protects from unwarranted invasions. a similar goes into in effect in illinois. we have been talking about rain a lot. i guess it's coming but today is beautiful. >> have you been outside? >> i took a little walk outside. >> gorgeous. >> a little chilly, crispy. the rain is coming sooner than you might think but in the meantime, weather headlines today a nice dry break. we're in between storm systems right now getting plenty of sunshine, mostly sunny skies. partly cloudy, cool night overnight, as well. and then a chance of rain returning as soon as tomorrow afternoon. check this out. this is a view of alameda. you can see san francisco there

in the distance, the bay bridge. temperatures are cool. low to mid-50s by later on this afternoon. low 50s right now. it's because this high is in place for now but watch this. this is that low that's going to bring us showers as soon as friday afternoon. it is getting closer towards the bay area. light rain we're anticipating. increasing clouds overnight friday morning and early friday afternoon, scattered showers throughout the day much of the day friday and right there into saturday morning, the first half of saturday looks wet. so your afternoon highs we are seeing a lot of low to mid-50s kind of similar actually to yesterday around this time. 54 in oakland. 52 in fremont. 52 in san rafael. and 51 out in livermore. by later on this afternoon. your overnight temperatures cool, as well. not quite freezing but look at some of of these temperatures in the valleys, fairfield 34 as

well as livermore. a little milder in san francisco, going to see mid-40s overnight tonight. so here's your forecast over the next several days. this is the dry break today and then your own settled weather returns to the bay area friday into saturday morning. looks like we are going to stay dry sunday through new year's day and then more wet weather returns by wednesday. so this would be the day if you want to head up towards the sierra. the roads are looking good right now. but they are expecting more snow out by heavenly. chance of of snow by saturday. 27 lifts open to the public. kirkwood got 25 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours. 10 lifts open and great skiing conditions over at squaw. chance of more snow once again friday and saturday. they got 20" right now. and a lot of lifts. ready to go. >> 127" that's like a season for them. >> it's awesome. good snowman-making weather. all things. >> all right. we'll taking i

it's the kind of thing you might normally associate with a super bowl or the world series but when wisconsin and stanford kick off the rose bowl on new year's day there's more on the line than just the game. the mayors of madison and palo alto are doing some wagering. the losing mayor will wear of opposing team hat during a city council meeting display the flag of the winning team for a day in january and the losing city will organize a tree planting in honor of the winning team. so let's go, cards. i went to cal, so... cbs 5 reporter juliette gooh explains how it all startedh a well, for the cost of a postage stamp, a group of bay area women received a priceless gift. cbs 5 reporter juliette goodrich explains how it all started with a discovery at a thrift shop. >> these five cards must have somehow gotten mixed in. >> reporter: pam rousseau was at a thrift store in hayward when she found five cards sealed shut with handwritten addresses but no stamps tucked away on a lower back shelf. >> the handwriting was scribbly and i wasn't sure if it was an elderly person. >> reporter: so she put stamps

on them with a little note attached explaining who she was and where she had found the letters. so as it turns out, this card that pam put a stamp on made its way to this home in alameda. only as we find out, this card was supposed to have been sent five years ago to marianne. >> and open it up and i saw sue bunker's name. and right away, i thought, a card from an angel! >> reporter: you see, sue bunker passed away two years ago from pancreatic cancer. and these three women were her closest friends. all three receiving sue's holiday card five years later thanks to pam. carolyn boone's card reads. >> may 2007 be full of good health, great travels and occasional ice cream social. >> it's nice to know we're still in touch. [ laughter ] >> reporter: without the other knowing, they have each sent a thank you note to pam for take

the time to mail the cards. they also shared glowing thoughts about their dear friend. >> i was so touched by the whole thoughtful gesture that she had done that i had to just sit down and send her a message. >> dear pam, your thoughtfulness in choosing to mail those envelopes touches my soul. >> reporter: everyone so touched by the journey of the holiday cards decided to meet one another and toast to their dear friend, sue, and to their new friend, pam. >> everybody just thought it was an amazing christmas story. >> reporter: and all of them certain sue was toasting right along with them and smiling. in alameda, juliette goodrich, cbs 5. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

okay, for today's tony's table with stephanie like it says behind us you made me this dish in sicily. i visited you in your apartment there going to school in sicily. tough, huh? >> rou life. i used to go to the farmer's market in italy in the morning and get the vegetables they had and the day you came is what they had. >> zucchini, tomatoes and that's it. whatever pasta she had in the cupboard. so we sauteed the zucchini in olive oil and garlic. >> and we added some cut-up roma tomatoes. >> and add a little pasta

water. it creates its own broth. it makes the flavors come together. >> brings it together and you can see on the bottom of the pan there's a little bit of orange color and that's just the broth. >> with the tomatoes and everything. >> i'm going to add this, the rigatoni. add a little bit more pasta water if you like. mix it up. beautiful. look at that, steph. this reminds me of being in that apartment looking over the bay of terramina. a little pepper. a touch of salt. and that's all you need. >> go ahead. >> put it out there. oh!! delicious! and i sat and ate this on your balcony and i like what you added on the very top. >> a little bit of mozzarella. >> shredded mozzarella right on top of there. it brings it all together. perfect. >> stephanie, let's go back to sicily now. bye. >> ciao, we're going to
